Japanese American Historical Mapping Project

JAHMP owes its existence to a 2004-2005 California Civil Liberties Public Education Program grant (CCLPEP) grant to fund:

  • An educational website for classroom teachers, students, researchers, community organizations
  • Migration mapping histories of Palos Verdes vegetable growers for preservation
  • Mapping assets & staff for an ArcGIS database at CSULB Dept. of Geography to map and digitize ranch sites
  • Deposit of JAHMP archives & report into State of California Library archives, to the Office of Historic Preservation

Most of all, JAHMP expresses profound appreciation to Issei-Nisei vegetable grower families who willingly contributed their stories, time and family photos over a two-year period. It took personal courage to relive their memories of World War II and determination to pass on the history to their grandchildren and future generations. Also support for JAHMP efforts from the Palos Verdes Reunion and San Pedro Hillbillies groups

JAHMP shares the mission of the Preserving California Japantowns which is surveying over 40 small Japanese American community history and buildings for preservation. See their website at: www.californiajapantowns.org

A personal acknowledgment to Prof. Lane Ryo Hirabayshi, who inspired this project by sending maps that piqued my curiosity so much – I had to "do something." Prof. Hirabayshi is the first UCLA Asian American Studies appointment to the George & Sakaye Aratani Professor of Japanese American Internment, Redress and Community Endowment.
